Caring for Your Nightguard

  • Your nightguard appliance should be custom made by Artistic Dental Associates to comfortably fit your teeth. This device relieves the overload created when your teeth interlock together. The bite is designed to put less stress on the back teeth and allow you to 'slip and slide' when trying to grind.
  • The decrease in bite force means that the power closing muscles of the jaw do not 'fire,' in turn putting less stress on the two TM joints.
  • Your appliance should be worn every night and kept dry in its case when not in use. It is very common for pets to chew nightguards, so please keep them in their case and off the nightstand.
  • You should store your appliance after it has been cleaned – brushing it daily with toothpaste on a toothbrush.
  • Once a week, you should scrub your nightguard with an anti-bacterial soap to help prevent a foul taste that can develop from bacteria penetrating the acrylic surface.
  • Your appliance should be brought to your dentist's office annually for evaluation of fit and bite corrections.
